Trick or Treat?

Treat of course!

I love Halloween… and I also love the Halloween candy (yep, I do). As a kid my favorite candy was always Milky Way (although Rolo’s and snickers weren’t far behind) and I’d eagerly trade with my friends to get as MANY Milky Way’s as I could- and frankly if my apartment building here in New York City had trick-or-treaters I’d probably still give them out! Alas they don’t.

Anyway, Halloween as a holiday is a super-seller of gooey, yummy candy, that unfortunately is also loaded with garbage. And as you guys know, feeling good about what you eat is super important to me. I CAN feel good about my Milky Way candy now, but I know I can feel even better if I mix the old faves with some new cleaner stuff. Good news is, newer cleaner stuff DOES exist (keep reading).

Lucky for us, various companies have started making some pretty awesome candy that’s colored with cleaner ingredients- like beet juice and turmeric instead of Red #40 and Yellow #6. These same companies are also often using cane sugar instead of corn syrup for sweetener too, which I’m also jazzed about.

So to help you gather these healthier Halloween candies to mix with your favorite old-timers, we’ve assembled a list to help you prepare for halloween. These companies and products below are made using better-for-you ingredients that can satisfy even the pickiest kids in the neighborhood (and kid!), I promise.

Healthier Halloween Candies To Hand Out This Year:

OCHO Candy is made with organic chocolate made and non-GMO, gluten free simple ingredients. Their candies are made in small batch and come in 3 flavors: caramel, peanut, and coconut.

The Lovely Candy Store sweetens their delicious fruity gummy bears with real honey, and are free artificial ingredients, high fructose corn syrup, nuts, gluten, and gelatin. They come in individual snack packs perfect for handing out this Halloween.

Yumearth uses only non-GMO, USDA organic ingredients in their tasty lollipops. Each pop is individually wrapped, and free of common allergens like gluten, nuts, and dairy.

Enjoy Life’s Halloween Chocolate Minis are scary good, without scary ingredients. They took 3 of their dairy-free chocolate bars and made them into bite-size minis. These candies are certified gluten-free, verified non-GMO, and free-from 14 common allergens.

Cocomels are made with premium ingredients, organic sweeteners and are completely plant-based. Their unique and delicious tastes makes for a crave-able treat, and a much healthier Halloween option then we typically see. They come in sea salt, vanilla, and espresso each delicious and satisfying.

I can confirm UNREAL’s chocolates and candies are unreal and are perfect to satisfy that sweet tooth. Their treats are organic, sustainable, and use non-GMO ingredients. We love that they use no corn syrup, sugar alcohols, erythritol, or stevia which all can be upsetting to the gut. They also  offer  vegan and gluten-free products, but all of their treats are soy-free and kosher. Some of our favorites include their dark chocolate coconut bars, dark chocolate peanut butter cups, and dark chocolate-covered peanuts.

Smartsweet’s is a candy brand that aims to limit sugar, putting a fun spin on gummies.  Instead of using added sugar, artificial sweeteners, and sugar alcohols they use naturally sourced acids to add juiciness and flavor. The fun colors of their gummies are naturally flavored utilizing vegetable juices. Additionally, they add plant-based fiber to help with blood sugar control (if you are sensitive to added fibers, this may not be the candy for you!). If this is not enough, they are free from common allergens (gluten, dairy, tree nuts, and peanuts) and are non-GMO.

Evolved is a vegan chocolate company that started in NYC (and one of my favorites). They are unique in that they sweeten their chocolate with organic coconut sugar or monk fruit and have paleo and keto options. Additionally, they are vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, organic, kosher-certified, and fair-trade. Phew, that was a lot! Still, I cannot forget to mention that you can create your own custom bars with unique flavors online!

Another popular chocolate bar company (although they now do crackers too!) is Hu. Hu is vegan and paleo-friendly and prides themselves in their simple ingredients yet unique flavors. Hu uses no refined sugar, no cane sugar, no sugar alcohols, no erythritol, no dairy or soy, no lecithins, and no emulsifiers. Plus they are organic, fair-trade, and use high-quality oils (think extra virgin olive oil) and unrefined coconut sugar. What’s not to love?

Skinny Dipped Almonds are a fun take on chocolate-covered almonds. Their almonds are thinly dipped in chocolate while containing less sugar and more protein than the typical chocolate-covered almond.  They come in various flavors ranging from peanut butter and jelly to dark chocolate peppermint, to salted caramel (the list goes on)  while using no artificial colors or flavors. Their products are non-GMO and gluten-free.

Free2b Dark Chocolate Sun Cups are for all the allergy people out there! They are free from 12 common allergens including dairy, tree nuts, gluten, coconuts, peanuts, eggs, soy, sesame, mustard corn, fish, and shellfish! Despite everything it does not have,  they are still a tasty and satisfying treat that is filled with sunflower butter rather than the typical peanut or almond butter!

Wedderspoon Manuka Honey Pops

Wedderspoon Manuka Honey Pops are a fun and healthy spin on the typical high sugar and artificial flavor/coloring-filled lollipop. Their lollipops are made of organic Manuka honey and have zero colors preservatives. An added bonus is that Manuka honey boasts immune benefits and each lollipop contains 100% of your required daily Vitamin C.
